I guess that Quicktime could in theory affect a browser's support of PNG's
as it can be used as an image viewer which supports PNG and a plug-in, so it
could act as a PNG viewing plug-in. Whether it does that or not I'll leave
up to others to answer ;-)
As to why one would want to use PNG images, one reason is because of the
patent issues surrounding the compression format used in .gifs. I wrote an

On top of the patent issues (which haven't really affected anyone too
adversely!), PNG supports a bunch of other improvements upon the gif format.
