For an absolute basic book: Julie Meloni. She has two books, I own PHP
Essentials, but I have a friend that is very, very glad she paid half the
price for PHP Fast & Easy.
Once you get a basic grasp, Wrox press is apparently the way to go, but the
HWG's new PHP instructor, Hank Marquardt, is going to use the php4 Bible by
Tim Converse and Joyce Park. The book was tech edited by Richard Lynch.
Hank and Rich are also co-founders of the Chicago PHP User's Group, so, I
bought the PHP 4 Bible despite the reviews at amazon.com.
For on-line resources, I've found http://www.webmasterbase.com/ to have
some very nice, thorough tutorials.
FWIW,
