Hi All,
I have been tasked with putting together a comparison document for "roll
your own" cms vs off the shelf systems such as Vignette.
Apart from the obvious (cost vs development time) - does anyone have any
good resources for
looking up the pros and cons of building your own solution from something
like PHP.
How would I go about comparing things such as performance, scalability,
internationalisation,
personalisation, etc, etc - here are my initial thoughts.
Open source:
Performance - Fast, reliable performance for LAMP technologies is well
documented.
Scalability - since PHP can use java or DCOM + Oracle, etc. the business
tier and back-end can be scaled as easily as an out of the box solution.
Extendability - modular, OO programming?
Internationalisation/Localisation - don't know - I assume PHP, etc support
UTF-8
Personalisation - sessions
Usability - depends on good communication between the developers and the
users (ha!)
Load balancing/failover - don't know
TIA for any help
Lez
