No, this has nothing at all to do with the box model hack, which is between
IE and the other browsers.
Instead it's exactly the described problem: IE 5.0 Win does not allow you to
set paddings and borders to inline elements, while IE 5.5 Win does allow you
to.
There is no CSS solution, it's simply not possible. I have had the same
problem and finally let it be.
