Try
news://news.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.multimedia.windows.mediaplayer
(there's also a web based interface via www.microsoft.com/communities)
That said, you probably do have some kind of deeper issue. You may need to
open a call with PSS to debug the issue (or, if you feel comfortable with a
debugger, you can do it yourself: www.microsoft.com/ddk)
Cheers

: Subject: [thelist] Windows Media Player freeze
:
: Hi everyone...
:
: I have this weird and annoying problem that I can't seem to find a
: solution to. Here's a bit of history.
:
: The 'puter I use is a dual-CPU P-III @ 1.4GHz with 1GB of memory. I'm
: not sure if this has anything to do with it, but it's only on this
: machine that I've encountered this.
:
: Previously, in september 2002, I installed Windows 2000 Professional on
: the machine, and initially everything worked fine. I could view the
: occasional video clip. However, not having broadband connection at home
: (which is where I did the initial install), I brought it to work and ran
: Windows Update. I can't remember if the problems started at this time
: or not.
:
: Now, having just installed Windows XP Pro (SP1), same procedure as
: above, installed at home, updated at work. Same problem once again.
:
: The problem is as follows; When I run Windows Media Player 10 (same
: problem with earlier versions) the video starts playing with sound and
: all. But, after a short time (seems random, but always ~<30 seconds)
: the video freezes and the sound keeps playing - WAIT FOR IT - this is a
: total system video freeze! I can't move the mouse pointer, nothing.
: And, after a short while after the freeze (sometimes immediately) the
: sound starts in a short staccato loop (if you've heard a CD player get
: stuck, that's about how it sounds).
:
: This occurs in Media Player Classic (6.4.83) as well, so I don't think
: it's related to Windows Media Player per se, but rather something in the
: video subsystem (since all video freezes). I initially used DirectX 7
: (which is shipped with XPSP1), but upgrading to DirectX 9 didn't fix
: anything.
:
: The graphics card is a GeForce4 MX420, and I've downloaded and installed
: the latest drivers with no success.
:
: Looking back at what's been installed, prior to Windows Update, here's a
: list of what might be relevant: AviCodec 1.2, FFDShow 20050216, GSpot
: 2.52, Media Player Classic 6.4.83, RealAlt 1.11, DVDDecrypter 3.5.3.0,
: and QuickTime 6.0.
:
: However, I believe it all began after running Windows Update... Don't
: know exactly what caused it though, which is why I'm here.
:
: GSpot isn't reporting any problems with the codecs, and since they all
: worked fine before Windows Update, I suspect something deeper within
: Windows.
:
: Please note: This happens with video files without sound as well, so I
: don't think the audio subsystem has anything to do with it.
:
: If anyone has any suggestions as to how to fix this, please help. I've
: scoured the web for solutions to this particular problem, but I have yet
: to narrow it down to this specific problem. Haven't found a single soul
: yet that seems to have the same problem... The weird thing is that it
: behaves exactly as it did with Windows 2000 Pro, but this is the only
: thing that crashes EVERYTIME! Still, I can listen to streaming radio,
: MP3s and such with Windows Media Player... It's only video that gets
: messed up and hangs the entire machine (hard reset is the only working
: solution)...
:
: Any light shed on this is highly appreciated. This annoys the hell out
: of me even if I don't view much video on it. I still want to be ABLE to
: without fear of a system-wide crash. Note, I haven't tried playing DVD
: movies, so I don't know if that works or not...
:
: Thanks for any and all help. If you have any follow-up question to
: this, I'll try to answer to the best of my ability.
:
: Again, thanks.
