FWIW, I just looked at the Firebug extension page via an FF2 browser,
and this is the text at the top:
"Firebug 1.2 requires Firefox 3. Firefox 2 users should install the
older 1.05 version of Firebug."

Sorry to hear about your experience, mine is actually quite good, overall.
I just installed it after a hard drive crash (and a reformat/clean
install of my system). I managed to save my old firefox settings.
When I re-installed, it was 90% what I had before. I can use my
web-developper toolbar, no script, customize google, grease monkey,
tamper data, live http header, view dependencies and a variety of others.
I cannot use Adblock. I miss that one! Worse yet, I can't use
Firebug, which was one of my most used, but I expect that the
developers will come out with a new version.
In short, when having restored my profile, I was 90% up to normal, it
even looked the same and the address bar works the same, but there is
the 10% new browser hiccup.
No one has ever regretted backing up -- least of all, I.
