Cate,

I think you are refering to alpha and not gradient here, so I'll try and
answer both.
This is for Flash 3, Flash 4 is similar.
Gradients :
Can be applied with the paint bucket. To create a new gradient click on
the colour chooser rectangle select the gradient tag and you can then
create new and wonderfull gradients of either linear or radial
distribution.
The way Flash handles gradients is just superb.
Alpha :
With Flash you can not only set the individual rgb settings for a colour
but also it's opacity using the alpha channel. Unlike rgb values that
are in the range 0-255, alpha settings are in the range 0-100%. The
dialog box that allows you to define new colours and or gradients
includes a box for setting the alpha.
Using colour based effects in Flash :
If you have an instance of an object on stage you can change it's
instance properties. Right-click on the object and choose properties.
Select the colour effect tab. Under this tab you have various options,
one of them is Alpha. Changing the alpha value for the object will make
it allow you to change it's opacity.
