    a site i'm working on has a lot of links and some are broken. do any

What existing tools are you using? If you have a copy of DreamWeaver lying
around, try a link check (under file). You'll need to define your site
first. In fact, it might be worth downloading the (fully functional) trial
version at http://www.macromedia.com/ just to clean the site up from the
start. 

The only problem I've had with DW is it tend to barf when you try and make
it check a large site, say 1,000+ pages. 

Linkbot is supposed to be a killer utility, but I've never used it.
