[thelist] reorg & redesign at the same time?

We're starting to plan a redesign of our site, and at the same time
are thinking perhaps it might be a good time to reorganize as well. We'll
be doing user surveys and all that, but my question to you all - is it too
much to throw at your users to redesign AND reorg all at the same time?
They'll be thrown by everything looking different, but if the organization
stays the same, then they will still be in slightly familiar surroundings.
But I'm worried that by changing the whole thing, users will have to deal
with both a new look and a new way to get to things. On the other hand,
though, this may be the best time to reorg - hit it all at once.
In an attempt to thwart the inevitable questions - the redesign is
mandated by the University Webmaster - our department is to be a
second-level guinea pig for a new university-wide redesign. I like the way
the site is currently organized, but I have heard some feedback that it's
too hard to navigate, too hard to find information. That's the reason I
want to do a focused survey - to find out if it is indeed a problem. But it
gets to be quite a task to organize the amount of information we currently
have, and the amount of information we hope to have in the future. Granted,
this is not a HUGE site, but larger than most of the other departments on
campus.
any thoughts would be helpful
thanks
Aaron :)
