Just wanted to follow up to all the posting last week about VMWare with
some words of my own..

I had a chance to sit down and play with it this weekend, and was very
impressed.

There are two applications that keep a windows partition on my drive; CF
Studio and Dreamweaver. Booting to windows just for one or two apps was
a serious pain in the arse naturally, so VMWare sounded like the ideal
situation.. My machine is a pretty vanilla p3 with 128MB of RAM, it dual
boots redhat 6.1 and Win98(rarely anymore :)

When you run VMWare, it actually wants to install an OS for you, right
there in a window on your current OS! Very cool, but I didnt think it
would work so I tried installing Win98 from within Linux using VMWare,
and needless to say, it went off without a hitch.. Recognized all my
drivers, even my CDRW(it took a bit longer than a normal win98 install
for some reason, about an hour overall).. But I already had a windows
partition, so I wanted to boot of that one instead of installing a new
OS..

All I did was mount my windows partition( to /win in this case) and told
VMWare to boot from that Dir - again it worked without a hitch and I had
a window with my usual desktop and windows icons..I had to make some
networking changes to get VMWares networking going(just an IP address
change) and I was able to browse my network 'hood, even my Linux
partition, which showed as another computer, that has Samba running!!!

After a couple more tweaks, I had it up to a decent resolution and was
plugging away in CF Studio like normal.

I've got a couple screenshots of the install and CF Studio up and
running at

if you all wanna take a look at it..

I just wanted to say thanks to the makers of VMWare for making such a
kick ass product! Expect my check for a registered version soon :)
