I considered that, and I do think it would be too confusing for the user.

Incidently, my customer (the one providing the documents) uses all Macs. 
They send me all these attachments in email - none of which have file 
extensions. I have to just guess the extension until I find something to 
open each file (usually they are doc's, pdf's, or tif's).
