perhaps I'm just in a mood to play devil's advocate, but if you think from
the standpoint of average joe shmoe user - is it easier for them to have the
document loadup in the browser for instant viewing? One thing that I hear
often from users around here, is that they download things and then can't
find the files. To us it sounds stupid, but to a person that doesn't
understand directory structures, etc, it's not an easy feat.

Microsoft is all about "ease of use" and "user friendly" applications.
Office 2000 has "smart" menus that will remember which items you use more
often and only show those, or move frequently used menu items to the top of
the list for quicker access. ACK! bugged the hell out of me until i found
the obscure checkbox to shut the damn thing off.

but that's the mentality in Redmond now - our customers are too stupid to do
things themselves, so we'll help them out. when in fact they usually just
end up making things worse. especially for the tech-head population that
just wants the facts, get the friggin' dancing paper clip the hell off my
screen!!

and oliver - the lude comments were completely intended. ;)

perhaps cause I'm starting to ease offtopic, or just because I have
something to share:

Did you accidently turn on the Content Advisor in Internet Explorer? Or
worse, come across a system that you desperately need to use and the Content
Advisor is activated? Microsoft tells you to give them a call for
information on how to turn it off, but here's the fix:
- exit IE
- in the registry:
HLM\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\ratings delete the
binary value "key = [hex code...]" (it should be the only value in that key)
- go to Control Panels - Internet Options, click on Content tab and click
Disable...
- enter a new password

although this doesn't completely reset content advisor back to it's default
dormant state, this DOES disable it so you can still USE the browser. might
be a better way, but this at least gets you going again.
