I can't help with your high-end scanner question, but I do own an HP scanner
and printer for everyday stuff (ScanJet 4C, and DeskJet A3 1000C). The
scanner is OK, but I have not been happy with the performance of the
printer, and I would not buy HP again. My parents last printer was also a HP
(a 500C I think), and we were not impressed with that either.

Anyone else had problems with HP products?
