RE: [thelist] A Standard Contract for Web DesignersWow! Thanks for all the
replies. Let's do it! (At the
very least we should cobble together a list of links, if
not an actual evolt-community standard contract.)
Meanwhile a quick answer to some early replies:

Sorry, look, no, I've tried but I just don't get it. What on
earth (or at sea? =) do you mean? XML? How?
Perhaps I didn't explain myself. I'm drafting a contract,
as in a document, for me ('the Designer') and my clients
('the Client') to sign, saying they pay me so much ('the Fat
Fee') to design and build their web site ('the Disaster'),
with no nasty comebacks ('the Sanity Clause').
OK, sorry about this, everyone, but I'm feeling a bit
paranoid and defensive. (Maybe a hangover from
a season with old family member or maybe too much
working on 'in the event of parties being horrible to
each other'!) And no I don't want sympathy (hey I'm
a grown up and old enough that when anyone says
I'm being childish I take it as a compliment!) - just a
serious response to a serious proposal.
Of course the head lemur's right that 'there is no such
critter as a standard contract' but then he goes on to say
he's got three, so they can't be all bad! As he also
pointed out 'this question appears on lists all the time'.
Well why?
Actually it wasn't so much a question as an attempt
to sound out the viability and interest in doing something
like Jeff R suggests "Wouldn't something akin to this be
a good addition to the Evolt site? Like an article on
contracts and some examples" which was kind of where
I saw the thing ending up, if it were wanted.
Of necessity it would be generalised, but Alan Herrell's
advice about good legal advice notwithstanding, an
off-the-peg contract has got to be better than none at all.
Hands up all those who have NEVER started a job without
that signed piece of paper and up-front payment?
