This is something I always forget so I finally had to write it down:
shift-cmd-3
will take a picture of the active window
shift-cmd-4
will turn your cursor into a crosshair and let you define the area of
the screen shot
In either case the screen shot will be named Picture x and should
appear on your hard drive and then you can do whatever you want with
it. Hope that works for you.
