Can I just echo Martin and say good to see someone posting *real and
checked out* alerts.

I'm sure that the vast majority of people here are aware of what hoax virus
alerts tend to look like and avoid passing them on, but for those who have
never seen a hoax alert, please take a moment to look at this page

http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/CIACHoaxes.html

Which provides a lot of info on spotting which virus alerts are real and
which are hoaxes.

Thanks to George for letting us know what to expect if Happy99 comes a
knocking! And for providing a link in the mail to a further information source.

<tip type="virii">

If someone send you information about a new virus DO NOT PANIC!

Start by taking a moment to check whether this is a real virus or a hoax,
and secondly whether it is likely to affect you or not.

http://www.virusbtn.com/WildLists/

The WildList identifies viruses that are "in the wild" - ie actively
spreading rather than just theoretical.

http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/CIACHoaxes.html

CIAC provide a great deal of information about virus hoaxes and how to spot
them.

What NOT to do is to send the virus alert immediately to everyone in your
address book! The chances are very good that the alert may be a chain mail
and while you will not cause any "damage" sending these chain mails around
takes up network resources and makes the sender look foolish to people who
have seen such hoaxes countless times :-)

If you are still unsure, why not send a copy of the warning to your
friendly computer guru (everyone has one) and ask their opinion as to
whether it is real or not.

In 5 years of online activity, I have seen 3 or 4 real virus alerts and
probably 30 or 40 hoaxes!
