So much to learn - such a cool field to be joining. You've already done
one thing right - join a mailing list with lots of smart folks you can
listen in on. Ask questions - experiment - test new things - look at
websites with every machine and browser you can get your hands on - get
a feel for browser differences. Make it a habit to look for stuff you
think is cool and effective and serves site goals.
So - read:
http://evolt.org
http://www.webmonkey.com
http://www.webreference.com
http://whatis.com <--to look up jargon you see on this list
http://www.alistapart.com
I have a list of the books which helped me:

You should also get cozy with the specs at:
http://www.w3.org/
(And at netscape and microsoft as well -- less important than they used
to be for some things)
Hope those help - and hope they're not too late.
