I was bothered by the thought that IE5 for Mac had implied that 96dpi was a
W3C standard, so I went to the source to find out.
I still don't know, but I came across a fascinating thread called "Origin of
Verdana (was RE: Public Domain Fonts for the Web)". It's really pretty
neat.

Reading through, I came across a couple links to this site:

It's a good discussion of fonts, web typography, and where there are
problems with common usage and browser rendering.
I still don't know if the 96dpi thing is true, but I haven't finished the
thread.

at it.
