Matt,
This is a completely different approach, but should work on any
platform using IE4 or later: add doubleclick.net to the Restricted Sites
zone under Internet Options. This has worked successfully on my home PC
running W2K. I think it may be necessary to first ensure that any cookies
from doubleclick.net already placed in the cookies folder are deleted.
Another step I've taken that seems to have been pretty successful:
change the security setting in IE for the Internet zone so that I am
prompted to accept cookies. When browsing the Web and the cookie dialog pops
up, it has a "More Info" button that expands the dialog to reveal details
about the cookie, including its domain. If the cookie is from an advertising
source, I simply select the domain name with my cursor, copy it, open IE's
Internet Options, go to the Security tab, and paste the domain into the
Restricted Sites zone.
The nice thing about adding a domain to the Restricted Sites zone is
that you are never again prompted to accept a cookie from that domain. IE
just rejects them outright. I do occasionally get "Page not available"
errors in place of ad banners on some pages, but that's hardly a problem.
