in my most recent rant http://www.lemurzone.com/edit/opinion.htm
I addressed this issue.
having vented there, i had imagined i could be a bit more rational about the
'cookies from hell' . something kept nagging at me, (other than IE5 stopping
the action of surfing to tell me about the cookie and asking me what i would
like to do about it)

Kevin O' Connor gave up too easy.

True, the purchase of Abacus Direct was a stock deal, but it represented a
large amount of money.

On March 16th i was here------
the new ugly wired with the lycos shroud of death across the top.

This is what happened that day.
Having the doubleclick optout cookie installed i thought i was safe. (silly
me)

On the top of the page is the usual banner ad. WaaaaaaaaYYYYYYY down at the
bottom of the page is another ad.

moused over the ad at the bottom, and you will see that it was a doubleclick
ad that redirects to the mediaplex server which sets a cookie on your
machine from mediaplex, which has no Opt-Out Policy.
since the doubleclick optout cookie masks IE from running up the flag, you
get a mediaplex.com cookie.

one thing led to another....

From the media plex site is this press release:
http://www.mediaplex.com/mp/news/pressrelease/08_001.html

NEW YORK, NY, and SAN FRANCISCO, CA, August 9, 1999-DoubleClick Inc. (Nasdaq
DCLK), the leading Internet advertising solutions company, and Mediaplex, a
leading eBusiness marketing company, today announced a strategic alliance to
bridge the gap between non-personally identifiable online targeting data and
an advertiser's product data. Harnessing DoubleClick's sophisticated
targeting capabilities and Mediaplex's pioneering technology, advertisers
can leverage timely back-end product information, including pricing and
inventory availability, and synchronize it with online marketing initiatives
to maximize return on investment.
==============================================
I know that it says that it is about product, but if you really believe
that......

So i'll bet that doubleclick is still collecting and mediaplex which has no
opt-out policy is the straw man.....

I really thought that they gave in too easily.

sigh

In my own opinion, this tracking cookie business needs to come to a
screeching halt!
Surfing this way is instructive however, one site had me refuse 37 times
before loading the splash page.
