Well, if you avoid the "publish" feature and just do ftp you might be
able to get away with not using it.
you just paste into the browser a URL like this:
ftp://yourUserName@ftp.somewhere.dom/initial_directory/
Then you can drag and drop files (and I think folders too) where you
need to.
