[thelist] Bring your daughter to work day

that's tough... two jobs ago i got all the daughters dumped on me
because the parents thought putting them with the 22-year-old
webmaster would be fun for them... i was young, but not *that*
young...

what i did was surf to their favorite sites and describe how things
worked... it didn't matter that i didn't know *exactly* how they
implemented it, but i talked about the database, how data was
stored, where it was stored, how people put it all together, who
probably did what, how the page reacted when they visited, why it
remembered them, even how to 'hack' the image directory if
directory browsing was still enabled, etc...

sounds boring, and it is, but when you show them how their favorite
stuff probably works, they might find it interesting... think about all
those star trek fans who buy the floor plans of imaginary space
ships... people are interested in knowing how their favorite stuff
works...

and while you're at it, avoid showing them the boring, mundane,
trivial work you do (whether or not it is is irrelvent, it will be to them
since they don't know or care about your company or its mission
statement, etc.)...

that help at all?
