I've participated in three "become a web diva" classes [we taught 7-14 year old
girls how to use the web, net safety, and basic web construction] for take our
daughters to work day, and here's what we found was useful:

- let them get their hands on the mouse and the keyboard. if they make a
mistake, don't tell them it's wrong, just suggest that they do it another way.
Most kids will come in knowing how to use a mouse.

- sadly, yes, N Sync, or Leonardo di Caprio (last time I did the class,
Titantic had just come out) or beanie babies is a good way to get them started.
When we taught them how to use search engines, that was what they searched for
anyway

- prepare a list of sites that might be of interest to your girls that will
broaden their interest a little, but are appropriate (clip art sites,
nickelodeon, femina, b's guide, webmonkey, etc).

- be aware that the kids will go home and teach the parents what they've
learned. So, make sure that you give a reasonable net safety lecture (don't put
your picture up or give your address, tell someone if someone is behaving in an
inappropriate manner, and keep in mind that you are talking to strangers when
you chat.) Do screen any female oriented sites for lesbian content -- can make
the parents upset. (no one flame me for being close-minded. just saying that
inexperienced parents can go totally nuts over one of their hot points)

- if you wanna teach them what you do all day, start out with 'here's how you
make the text and put the images in' We made the mistake of trying to make
beginners understand personalization one year, and lost everyone in the room.
Go slow.

- teach them about cybersurfari -- good way to encourage surfing good stuff

Hope that helps.
