Alice,
 If your doing a virtual tour kind of thing Ipix would work well Although
you must use a special lens to shoot the images.
If you want to shoot from the outside like you were walking around the
object Apple has a product called QuickTime VR.

I have not used QuickTime VR But I have done 100+ Ipix  so If you have any
