[thelist] JavaScript...beyond the tutorial...

Some of you are real aces at JS. I've been wanting to move beyond the very
limited capabilities I possess (window.open, rollovers, alert boxes, form
validation that doesn't work) and into actual'functionality' for some time
now. I think I had an idea this week for a little project that might make a
good intro.
My wife's site is in horrible need of a redesign, and we're slowly working
on it. One of the things that would be really cool is user tracking through
the different pages of the site. Users of the site fill out an inquiry form
to inquire about vacation rentals after browsing the properties pages in the
site. The original designer chose to put the form in the right frame so that
users could browse pages while filling it out. That was thoughtful of him,
but not a very elegant solution. I'm envisioning a check-box on each
property page (or even a link graphic) that a user could check/click to add
that property to the list of 'properties inquired of' in the form...sounds a
little like a shopping cart but there's no calculation.
See, the user browses, checking properties they're interested in, then, when
they click the link to the form, the properties they checked are listed as
'properties I want to learn more about'. Can I do it with javascript? If so,
where do I start?
*bonus* - Can the list of properties returned in the form actually be a list
of links to property pages?
Thanks,
