I think you'll find that "parts is parts."  You're basically buying the same
off-the-shelf parts from any company.  I think the key point to remember is
to know what you need.  (The under $2k limit stated in the original post
seemed low to me to get anything worth getting these days.)  The benefit of
going through a company rather than building a PC yourself is that it's
ultimately cheaper.  You can blame the company and get parts replaced easily
if things go wrong.  Much cheaper than counseling when you get frustrated
and start cursing the computer and family members. If you build it yourself,
you have no one to blame but yourself.  If you buy a PC from a company, you
have a scapegoat!  $3000 is cheap for being able to blame someone else.  :)

Actually, Dell uses off-board parts...straight off the shelf.
:-)  They just customize the drivers for smoother operations.
