What I find missing, and forgive me if someone already brought this up, is
the lack of top level domain (tld) enforcement. .Com, .net, .org, etc, all
have --though apparently completely ignored-- intended uses. The only ones
that are enforced at all are .edu, .gov, and .mil, but hey, that's Uncle Sam
and you'd expect them to be watching those.
But what about .com, .org, and .net? .Net was intended for ISPs and entities
that form the infrastructure of the Internet. .Com is for commercial
(for-profit) ventures, and .org was the catch-all that was supposed to be
where things like www.wolfgang-bromberger-sucks-bigtime.com would go.
Instead, .net and .org have become sloppy seconds to anyone who didn't get
their .com in early enough. A mess Network Solutions could have avoided
along time ago, but they we're a little preoccupied with deciding what to do
with all their money....
