A few minor wrinkles:
-- If they're already in GIF or JPEG, see if you can get the original
uncompressed files to work with. This will usually give you perceptibly
better results.
-- If filesize and appearance aren't critical concerns, then you can
automate the compression. For best results, though, it can often pay off to
compress each image individually... different images may compress better
with different settings.
-- If you're using the 3.0 version of the Dreamweaver/Fireworks studio,
then feel free to resize the image to the desired layout in Dreamweaver.
When you then click to "Optimize in Fireworks", Dreamweaver will pass these
altered dimensions along to Fireworks, so it can resize and compress the
source image to the desired dimensions.
