Yet another option is a low level format (you will still need fdisk to
configure the hard drive when you are done)  This will wipe ALL partitions
(ext, ext2, NTFS, fat16, fat32 etc) on a given PHYSICAL drive, and will
generally do a really good job of verifying disk integrity.  As with all
such operations excercise with care and patience.  Also check hard drive
documentation for known issues (online is usually a good place to start).

The manufacturers of most hard drives provide such a utility for free off of
their web sites (maxtor maxblast has this ability I believe, there is also
the quantum 0-write util to name a couple).

No need to bother with other software.

Remember, DOS-Fdisk is your friend.
