[thelist] (pls read first) Planet-Tolkien ripoff - SUMMARY

Ok, here's the deal.
It's run by a 17 year old.
There are two webpages, one a sweet looking one in green
(http://www.planet-tolkien.com/) and one that rips off evolt.
He says on the page that they're in the midst of a redesign. Now which,
exactly, do you think is the redesigned site? The one that looks like
evolt, honestly, looks lame-a** (not that evolt doesn't look sweet with the
same design) while the green one is totally kewl. (IMHO) .... if a little
dark.
Various people have emailed him already, and Dan and Alan have both
expressed that they're working on an official-like letter (is alan an
adminion? I don't actually know *grin*).
We, as the evolt group, don't really have to do anything. We've talked this
one into the ground... kind of funny that a topic we normally cover for
other people (site stealing) should suddenly happen to us, as a group.
Besides, as aard points out, only the fact that they've tried to copyright
the work violates any sort of common license.
<tip author="Xav" type="leaving">
Never, ever trust your boss. Even when you think he's a kewl-ass hippie
who'd never screw you.
As in, if you've been accepted to a university (like say the Digital Media
Studies program in Denver *boastboast*) in the fall, whatever you do, do
-not- give him two month's notice. Instead of slowly phasing someone new
in, he'll give you your notice (in my case, the 31st is my last day) and
send you on your way.
Fortunately for me, this simply means I'm 'on the beach', gettin' paid until
they find me a new position...which will last until I leave for denver.
Other people might not be so lucky...
The moral is, even if you think your boss is not completely lost to the
corporate world, you're very likely to hear the words "it's business, I hope
you understand."

(PS I agree with Paul *s* Good point)

|As a fellow civil service employee, I'd suggest strongly that
|you do NOT send a rant on a personal website from a .gov address.
|
|I recommend that the list members let EVOLT know about this
|site and let EVOLT and their PAID LAWYERS deal with it. Hopefully, the
|Evolt folks will CC the list, and list members (from their personal e-mail
|addresses) can support the Evolt corporate position.
|
|The answer to unprofessional behavior (especially if it's by a
|teenager, as some have pointed out) is to allow the professional
|organization that was wronged to address it in a professional manner.
