Algorithms for approximating elementary functions have been around for a
very long time.  They are not terribly difficult to code.  Coding for
performance is a bit more tricky (I did dozens of these in assembler
back in my high-performance computing days ... ugh, I'm old).  If you
are interested, I can point you to some references, off list.
