[thelist] intro/NT workstation PWS question/color tips
  2. I've just started trying to make asp go on MS Personal Web Server =
on an NT workstation (not my choice of platform, don't blame me)and I'm =
having a rough time with PSW. I've got it up and working, but now I =
can't get it to recognize changes I've made to files in the root =
directory. I really *really* don't want to get stuck using the =
ridiculous Web Publishing Wizard -- how can I make it recognize changes =
without renaming the directory in which the changed files resides (which =
is the only thing that's worked)?

  Hi

I've just started to use PWS & after much shouting at my stupid =
computer I think I've cracked it (the problem, not the computer:). =
Please excuse me if I state the obvious but I feel I better start from =
the beginning.

  1. PWS lives in a folder called "Inetpub". Your web site should reside =
in one of its sub-folders called "wwwroot". Just like when you do an =
HTML page & the first page that is viewed when someone types in the URL =
is (for example) "index.html", the first page in PWS must be =
"default.asp".

  2. I am currently working on a project for a friend and all the work =
is in a folder called "Simon" in wwwroot. Also in wwwroot is a folder =
called "ASP Tests" which is where I do all my practice pages. If I want =
to work on the "Simon" project I open PWS, click on the "Advanced" icon, =
click on "Edit Properties" and change the directory to =
"C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\Simon". Now, when I go back to the main page in PWS =
& click on the link below "Your homepage is available at:" it opens up =
the default.asp file in the Simon folder. Similarly, if I want to work =
on my test pages I go to "Advanced" & "Edit Properties" and change the =
pathway to "C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\ASPTests".

This is probably the hardest way of doing things but it works & =
that's the main thing. I spent 2 days wading through the "help" files in =
PWS but it so full of jargon as to be next to useless. Try it & see if =
that solves your problems. I hope I have explained this well enough & =
that it helps.
