Man I really feel for you.
If it is a good business relationship then they should see your point of
view. This doesn't mean they'll give in, BUT they should at least be
compassionate. If they aren't then I'd ask myself:
A) are they just having a really bad day, and they'll come around?
B) Is this what the relationship really is?
Do you have a contract or verbal agreement?
Unfortuneately (as you are aware) being able to salvage both the job
and the relationship may be impossible. sucks huh.
I guess from what you said, there is no contract.
Perhaps you can put in writing words to the effect that:
the four week build period begins only when he has his bit done.
You are not taking responsibility for his mistakes / errors /
mismanagement.
In life you will constantly be challenged.
Sometimes you have to make it crystal clear to people, friends or not,
that you WILL NOT be dicked around. Make it very very clear, and
stick to it. Otherwise you'll get walked on.
sounds like you might have to do that.
Obviously next time you'll give yourself a backdoor.
Best o luck
