[thelist] NSI Owns Domain Names

Aside from the change in the contract, nothing said here is news. I've never
viewed a domain name as property. You pay NSI $35 US a year (first two years
upfront) to provide a service: a .com name that is way easier to remember
than 209.43.23.111 or what have you. If you choose not to continue the
service (not renew) the service is revoked. This is not entirely unlike the
way I rent my apartment. I've signed a lease and pay my landlord a monthly
fee. In exchange I get to live in relative comfort. When the lease is up and
if I choose to not pay anymore rent, I don't get to live in the apartment
anymore. My lease also has terms that could void it.

It does suck that NSI has changed the contract without notice (a right they
reserved and we acknowledged in the orignal contracts) and opened the door
for censorship. Knowing this I won't be renewing my domain with them. NSI no
longer has a monopoly. I've already taken my business elsewhere.

Check out http://www.easyhosting.com. $15 Canadian a year. With the Canadian
dollar in the state it is that's less than the cost of a pizza for a lot of
people.
