well, designing for your own resolution is rarely ideal...

liquid designs are probably best...

allowing them to shrink to 600px (or less) will help ensure you aren't making fat content or 
unusable navigation, etc...

i actually saw a site the other day hardcoded at 768 px, which means when you factor in 
chrome, everyone running 640x480, 800x600, and 1024x768 saw a horizontal scroll bar...

as for designing on the iMac, the lack of a built-in floppy got my noodle since i'm still a fan of the 
sneaker-net...
