actually, i don't feel Painter compares to either Photoshop or 
PaintShop Pro... Painter is a different kind of package - it's a 
natural media painting and drawing tool, best used with a graphics 
tablet and some experience in traditional media... it's itnerface is 
also pretty difficult to get into...

as far as pixel pushing, Photoshop and PaintShop (and the Gimp) 
are all pretty much what i think you want...
