Yes indeed,
Outlook uses a proprietary binary mailbox format, which makes conversion to
other formats or reading the mailbox with other programs than Outlook
difficult work.
I prefer mailers that makes use of the standard unix mbox format (specified
in rfc 822). Chances are that in 20 years from now when you wanna read your
old messages, there will be some program avalible for the task, and if not
they're in plain text anyway so any text editor will do.

I recently found out that Eudoras implementation of the mbox format is
somewhat sloppy. When you import your messages from another mailer (In my case
Outlook Express), it munges the message separator so several messages can/will
be concatenated into one when you try to use them in another mailer.
