[thelist] DTD / <!DOCTYPE> : what diff?

When the W3C validator tell you to use the proper <!DOCTYPE> I assume 
they are referring to that bit one is supposed to put at the top of 
one's HTML doc which I assume refers to the DTD (Document Type 
Definition)s that the W3C keeps on hand.

However, since they say <!DOCTYPE> and not DTD, I further assume that 
these terms are not synonymous.

My best guess is that the DTD is the whole description of how the 
MarkUp is supposed to work, while the term "DOCTYPE" simply refers to 
the REFERENCE to that (external) DTD .

Is that correct?
