Well, I am very doubtful if they are going to replace the country names.
That would cause a lot of problems. Here a scenario: there is a domain name
xxx.de (Germany), xxx.fr (France), xxx.es (Spain). If they are going to
replace the country name  with eu, who owns the domain name xxx. I can see a
lot of court cases coming up.

I think they are going to complete with .com  which is the most prestigious
name space and want to give eu the same international aura. At least that is
what I have heard here in Europe.
