[thelist] Color Concensus

In my own work and testing I've found that there are so many ways to
slice-and-dice color depth.

My old VGA monitor and Trident 1MB card (the hardware with which I
designed my now-stale personal site, and large chunks of peterzale.com)
did wonderfully in concert with NN3. The browser didn't force colors.

NN4, OTOH...

The Macintosh gives a lot of latitude, except for the fact that it's
got abysmal market share (compared to you-know-what).

SGIs present a whole new set of issues if they're running @ 8bit. Been
there, done that too.

What I've drawn out of it is the same as aardvark's own approach -
don't obsess about it, but use those colors whenever it's practical to
do so.

Besides, images are easier to optimize if you're not forcing them to
display at 216 colors.

I'll gladly follow up on this... as it's been a topic in my personal
work of late.
