[thelist] changing the color of a div in NN

i want to change the background color of a layer in NN (through a js 
function, using a onMouseOver event handler), but it won't work unless i the 
function writes something to the layer first. but when that happens, what i 
originally had there disappears, and what i wrote to the layer doesn't even 
show up. any ideas?
