we will call these machine Dick and Jane
to connect two windows  machines you need a crossover cable
un plug the network cable.
boot up the machines go to 
Start>control Panel>Networking>
remove network cards>
close windows 
Shut down machines
remove cards
start machines
shut down machines
install network cards
connect machines with crossover cable
start one machine.
windows will find network card>
you may need the driver>
go to start>control panel>networking>
open networking>
you should your netcard
you should see the protocol NetBEUI
(installed by default)
at this point you need to install a client
click the Add button
Add a client >
select microsoft
select Client for Microsoft Networks>
it will tell you you need to reboot at this point
Click NO>
highlight the Client for Microsoft Networks
click properties>
you will get a dialog box under the General tab
do not check the top box
do not type in a domain name
click on the Quick logon radio button>
everything else should be blank
highlight the Microsoft Family Logon
remove it>
it will tell you you need to reboot at this point
Click NO>
click the add button again>
this time we add a protocol
add TCP/IP>
Highlight the TCP/IP and click properties
the dialog box that shows up needs only one tab filled in
Click the IP Address tab
put a dot in the specify an IP Address radio button
in the IP address boxes
type 100.100.100.1
in the subnet mask boxes
type 255.255.255.0
Click okay
on the network dialog click on the Identification Tab
type Jane in the name box
leave the other boxes blank
click okay>
highlight the netBEUI protocol
Click remove>
it will tell you you need to reboot at this point
Click Yes now>

'Jane' will shut down and reboot
you will now have a new dialog box that asks you to log on to the network
Jane will be in the name box
just click okay
Do Not Password Protect at this point.

a dialog box will show up telling you it can't find the network
click okay.

Step away from this machine.

Go to the other machine repeat the above proceedure
with these differences:

in the IP address boxes
type 100.100.100.2
in the subnet mask boxes
type 255.255.255.0
Click okay
on the network dialog click on the Identification Tab
type Dick in the name box

follow the rest of the proceedures above
and reboot

this time this machine will day Dick in the dialog box
do not password protect at this point
click okay
a dialog box will flash in the background saying connecting to the network
your desk top now has an icon on it called
Network Neighboorhood
click on this Icon
you should see two computers listed
Dick and Jane
Congratulations!
you now have a working network

Reboot Jane and you should see Jand and Dick in the network neighborhood.

If you are going to connect either of the machines to the internet
be sure that file and printer sharing is disabled..
