Wrong way round. US Letter is wider and shorter than A4. To be precise:

Paper      | Width (mm)     | Height (mm)
-----------+----------------+---------------
US Letter  |  215.9 (8.5")  |  279.4 (11.0")
A4         |  210.0 (8.3")  |  297.0 (11.7")
