Hi Gang
Firstly, thanks to everyone who sent me info(on and off List)
about setting up a network and trying to solve my problems. Unfortunately I
cannot remember all the names of people who helped because I had to
re-format my hard drive when it unexpectedly melted on me :( The problem
turned out to be a faulty card in my fiancee's machine which we have
replaced & now everything is working fine. I would be grateful though if
anyone saved (I think it was) Alan fantastic instructions on how to network
2 computers and could send it to me off List for future reference.
Secondly, I seem to remember a thread about new domain names in
the recent past which I cannot refer to due to the reason above. I received
an e-mail from my hosting company today that may be of interest to you all,
but apologies if this has already appeared.

"On 16th November 2000 ICANN, the organization responsible for assigning new
domain names on the Internet, announced seven new
domain names that are to be made available early 2001. The new names are:
.aero, .biz, .coop, .info, .museum, .name and .pro.

Of these new domains .biz, .info, .name and .pro are to be made available to
the general public for registrations. The other names will have
particular requirements for registration. For example, to register a domain
under the .museum namespace you will have to show that you are
a recognized museum.

The new names are estimated to be available for registration around
June-July 2002. Anticipation for the new domains is generating
tremendous excitement among the Internet community. Prestigious names under
the .com namespace such as business.com have fetched
up to $7.5 million recently.

Due to the high initial demand it will be extremely difficult for all but
the most committed and technically knowledgeable Internet users to
secure the name they want. Some registry operators are predicting that they
will receive as many as 160,000 registration requests during
the first 12 hours of registering the new domains."

There is a bit more after this about how the company that sent this can try
damn hard to register the new names as quickly as possible which I will
gladly forward to anyone who requests it. I didn't want to add that bit
because it seems like advertising something that I cannot personally
recommend, which I'm kinda wary of doing.

Kev
