Strong word of advice, the devices where you lay the slide under a device on 
a flatbed scanner are USELESS.  These suck, even on the best of flatbeds.  
What you want is a film scanner (ones which do negatives as well, an awesome 
feature in my book).

That being said, during my time at the U.S. Olympic Committee we used an 
older version of the Nikon Coolscan III with wonderful results.  Kodak also 
makes a couple of good ones.  These are all sub $1000.

If you're looking for one in a sub $500 range, there are several out there, 
Acer has a sub $400 scanner that i've heard (tho never seen) is good for 
scanning web-quality images.
