Adrian

This is my situation - the ease of resolving it will depend on how
the cable operator has set up their system.

The ideal:
~~~~~~~
You have 1 machine acting as a firewall. This has 2 NICs, one facing
out and one facing in. Because your cable supplier is kind, and has
allocated you a bunch of static IPs, all you need to do is hook the inward
NIC up to an ethernet hub, connect all your other machines to that hub,
allocated each machine one of your static IPs, and you're off.
Suggested firewall: http://www.netmax.com/products/secure_prods.html
The more likely:
~~~~~~~~~~~
Your firewall machine is also a proxy server, masking your internal network
by doing NAT (Network Address Translation) between its 2 NICs.
The outward one will have the IP address which the public network sees.
The inward one will have an IP reserved for internal networks (10.*.*.* works
nicely), as will the rest of your network.
You will also have a network server (which could be a service running on your
firewall machine) running DHCP, which means that you can keep adding
machines to your internal network, and they will each get handed a 10.*.*.*
IP everytime they reboot.
The proxy will see a request coming in from (say) 10.0.0.1 for a web page,
and forward it on externally as your external IP (say 61.62.255.255). As
far as the outside world knows, all you have is 1 machine at 61.62.255.255.
However, when the response comes back from the web server, the proxy
will forward it on to 10.0.0.1, and keep it separate from the simultaneous
request
to a POP mailbox from 10.0.0.2

Suggested firewall: either http://www.netmax.com/products/secure_prods.html or
http://www.cobalt.com/products/qube/

The pretty much screwed unless you're a genius like Dan:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They don't give you an ethernet connection, just USB, and hook everything
into Windows protocols.
Cheers
Martin
Subject:  [thelist] 2 pc's 1internet connection?
Hi Guys,
I searched (honest I did) but couldn't find anything that tells me how to
network to pc's to the internet.  The 2 pc's are networked and work fine
sharing files and printers though a hub.  One computer is connected to the
internet via a cable modem (this pc has 2 NIC's).  Can I use the lan
connection that exists for file and printer sharing to access the internet
as well through the existing connection?
Some pointing in the right direction would be appreciated.
Thanks
Adrian Fischer
