[thelist] dynamically centered divs?

i am wondering if anyone knows of a way to dynamically center layers - while
using absolute or relative positioning.

id like it to function as if it were <div align=center>, but i'd also like
to assign the style="position:absolute;top:value;"

so i guess im looking for some sort of formula or variable to assign the
left position value.  with a little help from my friends, i've experimented
with using a left value of width.length/2, but it made netscape angry and
threw the layer to the left.

any ideas?
