With Win2K 128MB of RAM is the "base" memory foot print for the OS itself,
IMHO. Everything after that is for your applications. If you are running a
MS SQL server under 'moderate' load your going to need the overhead. If you
expect higher traffic, then go to a gig. Seriously.
We use RAID5 and Disk Mirroring as our fail-safes against hard drive
crashes. With drives so cheap we are currently mirroring 75 GB drives for
each system (we use 2U rack mount machines so more than 2 drives in the
system is a very tight fit). The overhead to the OS to do mirroring is
minimal, IMHO.
