[thelist] HTML in web copy

not speaking as a designer specifcally -

i've had to deal with content on a grand scale in a few positions now.

the running consensus between all was that the editorial staff is usually
given a document outlining which code editorial is responsible for (ie:
those *&$# em-dashes, extended ascii, etc, etc,), with production
responsible for css and the rest of the goodies.

why give the editors power? because it allows the content to be done once,
reviewed once and delievered to the end user/client properly.

for a production dept. to keep control over content formatting creates a
lot of un-needed work during the production of, and the qa of the same
product once complete.

having to spot check and manually fix/change/alter word docs for web is a
pain.

how many of you have delt with the "what do you mean you didnt change the
semi-colon to a period?"

there is always talk about seperating content from formatting -- but the
beast is actually in getting the content in the right format for web
publication in the first place.

all in all, i've found that just like designers had a hard time switching
from print to www/new media -- most, if not all of the editors i've come
in contact with are of have struggled with the shenanigans of web
building.

a topic other than js menus! yay!
