something I was shown recently is FastCGI - http://www.fastcgi.com/ - it
runs as an Apache module and caches running CGI scripts in memory, so that
when someone else comes along to run your CGI script, it runs a hell of a
lot faster than it would to fire up the perl/shell/whatever interpreter,
compile the script, run the script, evaluate the script, etc ... :)

It looks good - have a look (boilerplate disclaimer: I am not affiliated
